Course Overview

Our comprehensive 8-Day Packraft Guide Training combines all three elements of professional packraft guide development into one immersive, internationally recognized program.
Certified by Rescue 3 Europe and the International Rafting Federation (IRF), this integrated course prepares participants with the essential rescue skills, guiding techniques, and assessment required to work safely and effectively as a professional packraft or river guide.

The training is structured into three consecutive modules that build on one another:

  1. Whitewater Rescue Technician – Professional (WRT-PRO)
  2. IRF Whitewater Guide (Category A) Packraft Training
  3. IRF Whitewater Guide (Category A) Packraft Assessment

Module 1: Rescue 3 – Whitewater Rescue Technician Professional (WRT-PRO)

3 days (18+ hours)
This packraft-specific WRT-PRO course provides the foundation for safe operations and rescues in whitewater environments. Designed for professional river users—such as packraft guides, raft guides, and safety kayakers—it covers both individual and team rescue scenarios in dynamic water.

Key Learning Areas:

  • Hydrology, risk management, and decision-making
  • Swiftwater swimming, wading, and rope systems
  • Rescue scenarios and victim management
  • Equipment use and care
  • Scene organization and communication

Prerequisites:
Confident swimmer with experience in paddlesports (packrafting, rafting, kayaking, canoeing, etc.)
Minimum age: 18

Module 2: IRF Whitewater Guide (Category A) Packraft Training

3 days (18+ hours)
This intensive training develops your technical, instructional, and guiding abilities. You’ll practice personal paddling skills, trip management, and client rescue under supervision. The focus is on effective communication, instructional methods, and developing the mindset of a professional guide.

  • Rescue practice and scenarios

Prerequisites:
Confident swimmer with paddlesport experience and packrafting experience
Minimum age: 18

Module 3: IRF Whitewater Guide (Category A) Packraft Assessment

2 days (12+ hours)
This assessment evaluates your proficiency as a professional guide on Class II–III whitewater. Successful candidates receive IRF Guide Certification (valid 3 years).

Assessment Components:

  • Trip planning and pre-departure checks
  • Safety demonstration
  • Personal paddling and swimming skills
  • Guiding and communication
  • Ropework, throwbag, and flip tests
  • Client and gear rescue techniques
  • Flotilla management and emergency scenarios
  • Written theory exam

Additional Requirements:

  • Current First Aid Certificate (Standard for Level 2 / Advanced for Level 3)
  • Proof of logged experience (Level 2: 10 runs or 20 hours on Class II+; Level 3: 30 runs or 60 hours on Class III+)
  • IRF Certification Fee: $40 USD (paid to IRF upon successful completion)
